Luang Prabang - Laos Travel Information

Luang Prabang, Laos
Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, sits at 700 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong Rivers. Being Laos' premier tourist destination and arguably Southeast Asia's most beautiful heritage town, Luang Prabang's entire historical section is dedicated to tourism, with everything from former royal palaces to over 33 Vats (temples), quaint shop-houses and sidewalk cafés. This former Royal capital still remains the main centre for Buddhist learning in Laos and is the perfect location for spiritual contemplation.

Cascading waterfalls, scaling peaks and the milky-brown waters of the Mekong River provide ample opportunity to explore Luang Prabang. This small and peaceful town is one of the few places where you can allow yourself to wind down completely and just go with the flow.

Luang Prabang International Airport

Gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Luang Prabang, the city’s international airport is located just 4 kilometers from the centre of town. Currently the airport is only able to accommodate smaller aircraft but after a runway extension programme started in 2011 is completed in 2013 the airstrip will be appropriate for larger aircraft.

The terminal building is rather old looking and somewhat run-down but it is reported to be one of the friendliest airports in the world and the facilities are limited but adequate as it is unlikely you will be spending too much time on stop-over in Luang Prabang.

The airport hosts regular scheduled flights for Bangkok Airways, Lao Airlines and Vietnam Airlines.

Arrival

Arriving in Luang Prabang you disembark right onto the tarmac and walk straight into the customs clearance area. If you need to apply for a visa-on-arrival head to the signed desk, submit your application form (which you can download prior to travel), your passport, two passport photos and US$20-45 depending on your nationality. US, UK and European nationals are charged US$35.00 while people from Canada are charged US$42.00. Swedes pay US$31.00 and Australians can purchase the visa for US$30.00.

This must be paid in US dollars or Thai baht. The visa is good for 30 days. The application will only take a few minutes then you should go through passport control. The baggage claim area is just through passport control. There is only one luggage belt so you may have to wait a while for your baggage to come through. Be sure to have the baggage stub you received at check in to give the attendant before you can exit.

Once you exit the arrivals gate you’ll find yourself in a car park and you’ll see a currency exchange on your right. Please note that only major currencies and Thai baht are accepted here. You will also find a host of taxis and touts offering you a ride into town.

Departure

The departure procedure here is a little different from most airports. You will have to pass a security clearance when entering the airport before you find your check in desk. After checking in, you wait in the waiting area for your gate to open. When the gate opens you go through immigration passport control and enter another waiting area. From here you get a nice view of the planes and the runway.

Transport Options (how to get to your hotel)

When you exit the arrivals gate you will enter a car park where a hive of people are waiting to provide hotel pick ups and plenty of taxis await. The standard taxi fare into the city is US$5.00 and it is only a 20 to 30-minute journey.

Eating & Drinking

Beerlao (Beer Laos)
Beerlao (Beer Laos)

There is a restaurant located in the car park of the Luang Prabang International Airport so if you are hungry it might pay to eat here before checking in. In the departures lounge you will find one small café in each of the two waiting areas. These cafes serve only basic snack foods as well as coffee, tea, beer and soft drinks.

Entertainment/Activities/Facilities

In the first of the two waiting areas you will find only a small café, an airlines office and the Bangkok Airways lounge. If you are a Bangkok Airways passenger show your boarding pass to the security guard and cross over to the lounge in the second waiting area. Passengers on other airlines will have to wait until their gate opens before crossing into the second waiting area where you will find only one small café and a very small shop selling jewellery and various souvenirs of Laos.

Shopping and duty free

Shopping in Luang Prabang, Laos

There are no duty free shops at Luang Prabang International Airport only a very small shop in the international departures lounge which sells gem stones, jewellery and some souvenirs of Laos.

Luang Prabang Weather

Luang Prabang has a tropical climate typical of Southeast Asia with a dry season and a wet season. Found along the Mekong River, Luang Prabang enjoys warm weather year-round with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 38°C.

Best Time to Come

The best time to visit Luang Prabang is from November to March when the weather is more comfortably dry and cool. It can also get somewhat crowded, especially in January and during festivals so be sure to book ahead if travelling during this peak season.

Seasons

Seasons in Luang Prabang, Laos
Seasons in Luang Prabang, Laos

The northeast monsoon brings dry, cooler temperatures to the city from November to May, while the rains come with the southwest monsoon from May to October. Annual rainfall is 1300 millimetres. Even during the rainy season the downpours last for only short periods, making it possible to visit Luang Prabang any time of year. The Mekong River may get flooded during the wettest months of August and September. March to May is the hottest time of year, when high levels of humidity combined with the heat can make for some sticky days indeed.

Getting Around Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang, Laos
Outdoors Experiences in Laos

Luang Prabang is fairly compact and best explored on foot or bicycle, unless you want to get out of the heritage area and discover other off-the-beaten-path attractions. Most five-star hotels may offer scheduled shuttle service to/from the old city.

Otherwise, your option is limited to tuk-tuks (motorised three-wheelers, also called Jumbos), which can easily be flagged down. Whether just going from one place to another or chartering for an entire day, these tuk-tuks come in very handy. Always negotiate a price before getting in.

For crossing the river, you will need to charter a long-tail boat. To get to Pak Ou or Ting Cave, hire a boat in front of Vat Xieng Thong. Boats that go to Xieng Maen are in front of Vat Phon Xai (west of town centre). To get to Vang Vieng, charter a Jumbo and get to the Southern Bus Terminal.

Airport Transfers

Luang Prabang International Airport is about 4km north of the old city. To get to town, you have three options (in case your hotel doesn’t offer free transfer service). Taxi and hotel shuttle service are both convenient but relatively expensive.

The hotel shuttle service may cost up to US$7 per person per trip, while the taxi is usually about US$7 per trip. You can locate a taxi stand right outside the arrival hall, while hotel shuttle is available on a pre-arranged basis. The cheapest option is a Jumbo tuk-tuk, which waits for passengers outside the airport gate. There’s no bus service to the old city.

What to Eat in Cambodia

FOOD AND DRINKS IN CAMBODIA

Traditional Cambodian Food Cuisine
Traditional Cambodian Food Cuisine

"A typical Cambodian meal would normally consist of a soup, a salad, a main fish dish, vegetables and rice. A Cambodian dessert, normally based on fresh fruits and sticky rice, complement the meal".

His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk.

The beauty of Cambodia goes far beyond the famous Angkor Wat ruins or the charm of the Khmer people’s simple life style. The country’s food culture is also not to be missed. In the Khmer diet, rice and freshwater fish play big roles because of the abundance of both. Cambodia has two main sources of natural fresh water, the Mekong river and the Tonle Sap, a huge lake connected to the Mekong. In the monsoon season, The Tonle Sap floods some 16,000 square kilometres of the country, irrigating rice fields and providing breeding grounds for fish.

WHAT IS KHMER FOOD?

Khmer Food
Traditional Cambodian Khmer Food

Khmer food takes influences from a variety of countries. Cambodia was a French colony for many years and also has many Chinese immigrants, so both French and Chinese foods are widely found. In the west of the country, the cuisine is, naturally, influenced by the food of neighbouring Thailand while in the east the flavors of Vietnamese cuisine are more evident.

Coastal towns such as Sihanoukville in the southwest are famous for their seafood, cooked in many styles, including Japanese and European. Common ingredients in Khmer cuisine are similar to those found in other Southeast Asian culinary traditions – rice and sticky rice, fish sauce, palm sugar, lime, garlic, chilies, coconut milk, lemon grass, galangal, kaffir lime and shallots.

TYPICAL KHMER DISHES

Fish Amok (steamed coconut fish in banana leaves)

In the Khmer diet, rice and freshwater fish play big roles because of the abundance of both. Amok is national dish, made from fish, coconut milk and curry paste.

All the ingredients are mixed together and put in banana leaf cups with coconut cream on top, then steamed. Another common form is amok chouk – snails with curry steamed in their shells. Best served with a plate of hot rice.

Samlor Machu Trey (sweet and sour soup with fish)

This dish is popular in many households in Cambodia as it’s not only easy to make but it also has a lovely taste. Its ingredients include fish, garlic, lemongrass, celery, tamarind juice, bean sprouts, pineapple and seasoning with sugar, fish sauce, and salt.

Many people also add some fresh green herbs and hot chili pepper on top before serving.

Char kroeung Sach Ko (Stir-fried lemongrass beef)

This popular Cambodian stir-fry is another common dish found throughout the country. After put beef in the heat oil with garlic, stir fry until the beef become tender. Then add vegetables such as red peppers and onion as well as the kroeung mixture.

Kroeung is lemongrass paste which is considered very healthy, made from a variety of Asian herbs such as lemongrass (known to have a benefit in lowering acne and pimples), kaffir lime leaves and galangal.

Twa Ko (Cambodian sausage)

Traditional Cambodian Food

Twa ko is a Cambodian sausage made from beef or pork and various spices. Just like any good homemade sausage, the authentic Khmer sausage contains at least 20-25% fat.

Some prefer to use pork belly as the main ingredient; it definitely serves the purpose well. Twa ko can be enjoyed on its own in barbecued, grilled or pan-fried style or served with steamed rice and fresh vegetables.

Nom banh chok (Khmer noodles)

Many locals start their day with nom banh chok, a popular dish known as Khmer noodles in English.

It consists of rice noodles topped with green fish gravy and lots of fresh vegetables including cucumbers, green beans, mint leaves, banana blossom and bean sprouts. It’s very similar to the Thai dish "kanom jeen".

Bai Sach Chrouk (Grilled pork and broken rice)

The simple and yummy bai sach chrouk is pork marinated in coconut milk or garlic before slowly grilling, and then served with broken or fractured rice and a small bowl of clear chicken broth as well as some fresh vegetables.

As part of the street food culture, it is available everywhere especially in busy neighborhoods. It’s so popular that many middle and upper restaurants also include it on their menus. Try it with iced coffee. It's so delicious!!

Kuy teav (Noodle soup)

Kuy teav is a noodle soup made from pork or beef stock and rice vermicelli and toppings including bean sprouts and green onions. A variety of meat choices can be added, such as pork, chicken, fish balls and beef as well as seafood.

In some places, it’s served alongside sweet, spicy, garlic sauce and a small slice of fresh lime. This is when the real flavours start. Head to the open-air food stalls at any market; you will find kuy teav shops within no time.

Lok lak (Stir-fried beef in brown sauce)

Stir-fried beef in brown sauce - Traditional Cambodian Food
Stir-fried beef in brown sauce - Traditional Cambodian Food

Lok Lak is a traditional Khmer dish, which is basically stir-fried beef slices (or pork) in a light brown sauce, served with rice and/or green salad and pepper sauce. Most restaurants across the county offer this dish but tastes are varied depending on the chefs and regions.

The beef or pork slices must first be marinated before cooking so that they are tastier and juicier.

Exotic Fruits

Anyone who visits a market in Cambodia will sees great piles of local fruits. Cambodia’s climate, especially around mid-year, ensures that plenty of colorful, tasty fruits flow into the market.

Many visitors are fascinated to see how many different types of banana there are – and how good they all taste. Other fruits to try in Cambodia are coconut, rambutan, mango, pineapple, mangosteen and durian – though the last item may not be for everyone; it has an unusual smell and taste.

Drinks

In the major cities, it is easy to get a hold of foreign beers such as Carlsberg, Heineken, Tiger, Guinness and Singha. Local brands such as Angkor, Angkor Stout and Bayon are also available everywhere.

Coffee and tea are usually available anywhere in the country. Imported wine is found only in the main tourist areas./.

Sihanoukville Beach - Cambodia
Sihanoukville Beach in Cambodia

With its beaches and casinos, Sihanoukville is primarily a tourist attraction, albeit one with an industrial deep water port. Because of the tourist industry the town of some 250,000 people has a more lighthearted flavour to it than Phnom Penh.

Situated on the eastern part of the Gulf of Thailand, Sihanoukville is a peninsula and has several beaches and small, offshore islands. It was founded in 1964 and is much more urban and modern than other Cambodian cities.

Considering the modest amount of visitors Sihanoukville has, the town features more than ample hotels, restaurants and bars. With its five beaches and three islands to relax on, Sihanoukville provides a peaceful counterpoint to Thailand's sometimes crowded beaches.

Now diners can choose to eat on the beach with their toes in the sand, or at upscale places with white tablecloths and gleaming silverware. The food is never less than absolutely fresh – in most restaurants you can choose your meal while it’s still swimming around a large glass tank.

Angelo’s Restaurant & Bar

Next to Hawaii Beach. From “The Hill” (or, to give it its full name, the Weather Station Hill, Sihanoukville’s best known nightlife center) take the beach road towards town and keep an eye out for the restaurant’s sign. Treasure Island serves Hong Kong-style seafood with great sunsets. The seafood, they say, is brought right to the restaurant from fishing boats.

Bars

Sihanoukville has many attractive and relaxing bars dotting the roadside from the centre of town right down to any of the beaches. Some have been there for long time and are good sources of information for new arrivals. Most places are a combination of guesthouse, bar and restaurant, usually serving up a good selection of Khmer and international food.

Many now have Internet connections and pool tables. Among the most popular bars in Sihanoukville are Holy Cow, Britannia, Emerald Bar, G’Day Mate and Kangaroo Kitchen.

Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main beach resort. Back when Phnom Penh was considered too dangerous for NGO officials they stayed here, resulting nowadays in a glut of hotel rooms.

Billed as a beach resort, also the county's main port, in reality the main raison d'etre is a casino destination. There are four casinos at Sihanoukville and they draw many foreigners.

There is quite a bit of nightlife in town especially in and around Ekareach Street and the port and beaches. Then there is the Angkor Arms and nearby Small World along with a couple of other expat-run bars. The Snake Pit is between north and south Victory beaches and features bar top dancing and hard-to-find Russian vodka (the owners are Russian). Another universally popular bar is the 24-hour G'day Mate which features ice-cold beer and a good menu along with rocking in-house music. For more laid-back nightlife stick to the beaches.

More a tourist destination than Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, there is less emphasis on traditional crafts for sale here. Still, you can buy a wide variety of products such as hand-loomed silk.

More a tourist destination than Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, there is less emphasis on traditional crafts for sale here. Still, you can buy a wide variety of products such as hand-loomed silk scarves, clothing, accessories, home accessories, decorative ornaments, coffee, condiments, handmade cards, notebooks, wall hangings, photo albums, and a variety of games including puzzles in Rajana, a centrally located shop.

On the Beach Road there is a range of beachwear, jewelry, bags and the items you'd come to expect from a Southeast Asian seaside town.

Phsar Leu, or upper market, is the largest traditional market in town. It is a dimly lit, partially roofed expanse of stalls selling everything from meat and vegetables to auto parts, jewelry, and of course clothes. Open at sunrise, closed at sunset, it is found on 7 Makara, near Omui Street.

Sihanoukville Activities

Considered by many as Southeast Asia’s next top beach resort, Sihanoukville attracts travelers, especially those who are looking for a destination with a lovely, unspoiled coastline.

Considered by many as Southeast Asia’s next top beach resort, Sihanoukville attracts travelers from all over the world, especially those who are looking for a new beach destination with a lovely, unspoiled coastline that has not yet become overdeveloped.

But it’s not entirely unsophisticated. After hanging out on Sihanoukville’s quiet beaches for a few days, visitors can try some of the activities below.

Cinema

Check out the Top Cat Cinema, an air-conditioned theatre with big screen, relaxing seats and properly scheduled films. They also serve traditional Western movie snacks such as pop corn and ice cream, soft drinks and even beer.

Scuba Diving

Snorkeling and Scuba diving in Sihanoukville thrives because of the area's favourable topographical features. Offshore local waters are warm and the visibility is low but it is better to dive out by neighbouring islands and Condor Reef as visibility is superior there.

Snorkeling, also, can be impressive around the nearby islands which feature rocky reefs, shallow waters and coral, and colourful tropical fish. Diving and snorkeling from December to June is ideal because the water is clearer and cooler than the rest of the year. Professional guidance is available on the beach to assist divers and the snorkellers.

Diving has been part of the Sihanoukville scene for quite some time, October to June being the busiest period. Some of the most talked-about dive sites are Koh Rung Samloem and Koh Kon which are quite close to Sihanoukville.

Those who have more time should also dive at Koh Tang, Koh Prins, and Condor Reef, which are further out.

Contact dive shops such as Eco Sea Dive (Tel: +(855) (0)12-654104), Scuba Nation (Tel: +(855) (0)12-604680) or Chez Claude (Tel: +(855) (0)12-824870.

Traditional Massage

Experience a real traditional Khmer massage at Islands Massage (Tel: +855 (0) 34 399 070), Sokha Beach Resort & Spa (Tel: +855 (0) 34 935 999) or Tropical Massage (Tel: +855 (0) 34 933 726). There are other places that advertise ‘massages’ but whose service strays beyond what most people might regard as ‘traditional’. If you don’t want to find yourself in such a place, check with the front desk at your hotel.

What to Buy in Cambodia

What to buy & Shopping when to travel to Cambodia

Shopping in Cambodia
Shopping in Cambodia

Encouraged by the government and aid organisations, local people are rediscovering their natural talent as weavers and craftsmen. A number of rehabilitation programs have sprung up since the eighties such as the gift shop at Wat Thanh in Phnom Penh, a co-op that trains Cambodians disabled by landmines in making attractive items out of silk and cotton fabrics, rattan, bamboo, wood and clay. The result is a pleasing selection of purses and handbags, clothing, furnishings, paintings and many other items.

Antiques

The sale and export of registered antique pieces is strictly forbidden. This, alas, has not prevented thousands of priceless artifacts from Angkor being stolen over the years, and sold overseas. Because of this and protective laws, you are unlikely to come across genuine antiques openly on sale in Cambodia.

Basket Weaving

Carried out mainly by women, many of whom cultivate and harvest the reeds by themselves, it is also an important aspect of rehabilitation programs for victims of landmines. The dexterity of the local people is beautifully reflected in products of all kinds, including baskets, bowls, plates, and many other useful items.

Betel Nut Boxes

These cute containers once reflected the status of their user according to its size, design and the material from which it was made. Mostly of silver, many carry ornate designs, and are often crafted into animal shapes. Originals usually contain a higher quantity of silver, but the newly manufactured varieties are still handmade, and a careful choice can provide you with attractive souvenirs or thoughtful lightweight gifts.

Cotton T-Shirts

Some very cheap and amusing designs are available, which make excellent small gifts or souvenirs.

Custom Made Tailoring

Following the lead of Bangkok's ubiquitous and often over-persuasive purveyors of made-to-measure clothes, ready in a day or even less, there are now many tailor shops opening in Phnom Penh. Tailors will happily copy from a photo or from a sample in your suitcase.

Gold and Gems

24-carat gold is used for most pieces in the Chinese tradition with prices fluctuating with the daily market value. Jewelry tends to be simple and unsophisticated, and although locally mined precious stones – especially rubies, sapphires and emeralds – can make excellent buys, beware of the increasing numbers of fakes. Lacquerware Most pieces originate in Vietnam, or are made locally by expatriate Vietnamese craftsmen. Local markets normally have a good supply, and the prices are often more competitive (with suitable bargaining) than in the markets of Vietnam.

Rice Paper Prints ('Temple Rubbings')

A lightweight, decorative, inexpensive and attractive buy, made by placing rice paper over a mould taken from a bas-relief carving from one of the Angkor temples and lightly rubbing over it with soft charcoal. When framed and suitably illuminated, they can look superb.

Silver

Silver was prized in the 11th century for religious and ceremonial purposes. With Cambodia's tourism industry expanding, numerous silver shops have sprung up in Phnom Penh, selling carved decorative and practical items. Other outlets are in village centres such as Tul Mau, roughly 30km north of the city. The normal working material is an alloy containing 70-80% of pure silver, and prices are based on a combination of weight and artistry, which puts bargaining skills to a good test.

Sculptured Reproductions

Cambodia has excellent reproductions and copies available at reasonable prices. The intrinsic skill of craftsmen – using the same locally mined stone used to build the ancient temples – produces sculptures of such quality that, with artificially induced weathering, have even fooled some experts. There are also bronze copies of small statues, Buddha figures, heads and apsaras for sale. These can be exported freely, but if you pass through Thailand on the way home, remember that the export of Buddha figures from that country is not allowed.

The Krama

The krama is the typical and ubiquitous locally worn chequered scarf. Uniquely Khmer; inexpensive, and immensely practical.

Weaving Silk

Weaving Silk in Cambodia is still handmade using traditional methods with the pattern dyed into the threads before the silk is woven, thus the task of dying and weaving a single piece can take several weeks. Older silk pieces (pre-1970) are increasingly prized.

Weavers can be seen in action at the historic silk centre of Koh Dach outside Phnom Penh. Some nice handiwork comes from Kompong Cham, Takeo and Kandal provinces.

Wood Carving

A traditional, if sometimes heavy, addition to your baggage allowance are carved wooden apsaras (nymphs), and a variety of other attractive and decorative wooden items, including furniture, which can be shipped home. Since the quality and maturity of the wood dictates its value as much as the handiwork, care in selection is needed, especially for more expensive items, so shop around.
