Halong Bay - Majestic Water Vietnam

Imagine a view of over 2,000 islands rising from the bright green ocean waters. Now after imagining this serene paradise, wouldn’t you like to experience it in person? Ha Long Bay, Vietnam was declared as World Heritage Site in 1994.

These limestone islets are a popular tourist destination of mystical intrigue. Although sometimes compared with Krabi of Thailand and Guilin in China, many tourists find Ha Long Bay more magical. There are caves, beaches and towering peaks that welcome visitors who wish to explore amidst this spectacular display of nature.

Ha Long Bay is a World Heritage site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Asia. These two recognitions speak to the significance and uniqueness of the area.

Halong Bay - Majestic Water
Ha Long Bay - Majestic Water

When to go to Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay can be visited the whole year round, however there are months when the temperature rise and storms develop in the bay. September through November are the best month to enjoy safer weather conditions and cooler temperatures. The months of March, April and May welcome blossoms and new greenery along the various cliffs.

Best Time to go to Ha Long Bay for the Weather

There are two distinctive seasons in Ha Long Bay. One is the wet and hot summer with the other being a cooler and dry winter. The temperatures range through most of the year from 59°F (15°C ) to 77°F (25°C ).
The seasons tend to fall with the following months:
• Summer - June, July and August.
• Autumn - September, October and November.
• Winter - November, January, and February.
• Spring - March, April and May.

Although the probabilities are not high, travelers should be aware that the months between August and October are considered typhoon season. Another note is that Ha Long Bay can be rather foggy during the months running from February through April. Some may like the fog as it adds mystique to the area, whereas others may find this distracting as they wish to see more of the islands.

When to go to Ha Long Bay for Leisure and Tourist Activities

Many festivals observed in Vietnam are related to cultural traditions of China following the lunar calendar which only has 29 1/2 days in a month. The festivals observed in the Ha Long Bay area include the following:

Tet Nguyen Dan - This is the New Year in Vietnam which happens every late January or early February of the year and is the most celebrated and important observance for the Vietnamese people. Streets and homes are usually seen decorated with colorful flowers and lights, families exchange gifts and the streets are filled with stalls that sell traditional foods.

Lim Festival - Folk songs are performed during this festival which happens every 13th day of the 1st lunar month. Thousands of locals and visitors from other countries come to Ha Long Bay during this time of the year to also enjoy the festival. There are weaving competitions, dialogue performances, processions and other must-experience activities.

It is important to know when these events. Some travelers seek these events out to experience special aspects of other cultures. Others find the extra crowds detract from their experience of the serenity that comes with Ha Long Bay. Deciding to travel during one of these festivals is your choice, but making you aware is important.

Hue - Imperial Citadel Vietnam

Vietnam’s 19-20th Century capital under her last royal dynasty, Hue is a quiet and attractive city home to some of Vietnam’s most impressive feudal remnants. Vantours will guide you through the landmark Citadel, once the residence of the royal family, where we climb the Citadel’s colossal Ngo Mon Gate for views over the Thai Hoa Palace, with its interior of gold and scarlet ironwood columns and royal paraphernalia.

Walk the grounds of the former Forbidden Purple City, scarred by decades of war, and admire the Hall of the Mandarins and the 2 tonne dynastic urns with their fine bronze work. We take a dragon boat up the Perfume River to the celebrated Pagoda of Thien Mu in its fine hilltop location. In the lush hills beyond the city, we explore the tombs of the former emperors, the beautiful lakes, pavilions, pine groves and palace of Tu Duc, and the startlingly Baroque-influenced tomb of Khai Dinh with its ornate tiled interior.

What to see & do

Citadel: The main reason to visit Hue is the citadel of the old capitol, along with the royal tombs scattered around the countryside. The citadel was begun in 1804 and served as Vietnam's capital until around 1945. The Citadel was originally made of earth, but earlier in the 19 Century, tens of thoudsans of workers laboured to cover the ramparts, built in the style of the French military architect Vauban, with a layer of bricks 2 m thick. The visit to the Citadel includes Flag Tower, Nine Holy Cannons, Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, Forbidden Purple City...

Thien Mu Pagoda: The first Buddhist Temple in Southern Vietnam, founded in 1601 by the first Lord of Nguyen-Nguyen Hoan. The new construction now is built in 1844, and has become the unofficial symbol of Hue.

Khai Dinh Mausoleum: Unlike many of the other tombs, this one is built into the side of a hill, and is, essentially, all of one piece. Its more European that the other tombs, having been built towards the end of the Nguyen period when the French were beginning to dominate the country. Parts of this concrete construction resemble a finely carved sugar confection.

Dragon Boat Tour on The Perfume River: Don’t miss this dragon boat trip up Perfume River to visit Thien Mu Pogoda, and Mausoleums of The Nguyen Kings.

DMZ Tour: From 1954 to 1975, Vietnam was temprorary devided into two North and South in Hien Luong Bridge, Ben Hai River in Quang Tri Province, about 80 km away from Hue. A full day tour from Hue, you can visit the historical place, DMZ.

What to eat:

Hue is famed for its Imperial cuisine, originally prepared for the emperor and his retinue. Although the emphasis is more on presentation than taste, an imperial banquet is well worth trying. So, Hue has hundreds of noodles and little rice cakes…In general, Hue food is more spicy than other regions in Vietnam.

Bun Bo Hue: The most famous local dish in Hue, a noodle soup served with slices of beef and lashings of chili oil. This is the next favorite noodle dish after Pho in Vietnam, actually more flavorful than pho. The soup is made with beef but served with a pork hock. The soup is strong in lemongrass flavor and is delicious.

Nem Nuong Hue: Vietnamese grilled pork patty

Banh Beo Hue: a steamed rice cake, a Vietnamese version of blini, these tiny, dainty, steamed rice-flour pancakes are as adorable as can be. It is generally topped with some colorful combination of chopped dried or fresh shrimp, scallion oil, fluffy green beans, crispy fried shallots, and a drizzle of fish sauce and rice wine vinegar. Slide one into your mouth and it's a soft, chewy, irresistible medley of tangy, salty, sweet and savory. You can't eat just one.

Com Hen: Hot white rice is part of every meal in Vietnam, but only Hue mussel rice is served cool. Hue people, after deciding that no food should be wasted, have designed this dish using leftover rice. This dish includes Chinese vermicelli, bamboo shoots, lean pork meat, and an assortment of green vegetables (banana leaves, mint, star fruit, etc.).

How to design your tour in Hue:

If you don’t have time, then one night in Hue is enough, if you have time, two nights is better./.

Ho Chi Minh, Formerly Saigon - Bright Lights City

In 1975, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) but today they are both used interchangeably by foreigners and locals alike, most preferring the former. Technically speaking, Saigon is actually downtown District 1 of the larger HCMC (which has 19 urban and 5 rural districts). Downtown Saigon is the most popular tourist destination in Vietnam. In the past it was referred to as the Pearl of the Orient and Paris of the East because of its wide boulevards, colonial-style villas and lively café society. Today, it is a curious mix of the past and present.

The streets bustle with pedestrians, cyclos, bicycles, motorbikes, taxis and SUVs all vying for right-of-way. Foreign businessmen and tourists share the walkways with noodle soup vendors and pajama-clad Vietnamese women balancing their weight's worth of seasonal fruit on their shoulders. Modern skyscrapers loom beside elegant, dilapidated villas. Bars, cafes and Hotels for every budget and taste and restaurants for every cuisine line the streets.

Shop in multiple-storied, upscale malls or haggle for bargains on the street. Get a manicure, facial, shampoo or foot massage for under US$ 10 with a cup of tea or be fitted for a suit or gown in a boutique. Saigon has it all within an area no more than a 15 minute walk from end to end. Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s commercial hub and its center of international business.

All cuisines are available in Saigon and most of the restaurant has menu in English. You may not know that Ho Chi Minh City was voted as the best dining destination in 2007 by Bon Appetit Magazine. Just name a few Saigon specialties. Join us, we will show you the best dining in Saigon.

Pho (Vietnamese Rice Noodle Soup): Considered as Vietnam’s Mc Donald, but it is healthier. Pho, pronounced fuh, is Vietnamese beef noodle soup which is perfect for any time of the day, lunch or dinner. There are over 20 different Pho's made with the best tasting beef broth ever, which goes well with any kind of meat, although beef is preferred. Pho is made up of a combination of meat pieces (beef, chicken, etc.), meatballs, herbs, chili (plain chili or sauce), lemon/lime to give it the sweet and sour taste, hoison (a rich thick brown sauce), white rice noodle's, and a fantastic broth which takes hours to cook.

Banh Xeo (Vietnamese Pan Cake): Vietnamese crepe-type pancakes made out of rice flour and turmeric powder and coconut milk stuffed with slivers of fatty pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts and pan fried. They are served wrapped with lettuce leaves and stuffed with mint leaves and other herbs, and dipped in nước mắm (Vietnamese fish sauce).

Goi Cuon Tom Thit (Vietnamese Fresh Spring rolls with pork and shrimps): These spring rolls are a refreshing change from the usual fried variety, and have become a family favorite. They are great as a cool summertime appetizer, and are delicious dipped in the sauces special for those rolls.

Cha Gio or Nem Ran (Vietnamese Deep fried spring rolls): Quintessentially Vietnamese, these delicate, crispy rolls are a refinement from the more robust Chinese rolls. The basic ingredient is minced pork, to which either prawns or crab can be added for savory flavor. The gossamer thin banh trang (rice paper) is hard to handle. You can use conventional spring roll skins as an easy alternative, but you won't achieve the same crispy results.

Fresh Coconut Ice Cream: If you like fresh coconut and ice cream, how about the idea of fresh coconut and ice cream all together with fresh fruits and some little jam.

What to see & do:

Reunification Palace: The former presidential palace of Saigon. This is where the North Vietnamese tanks smashed through the gates on April 30, 1975 and hung their flag. Replacement tanks are still on the grounds; the actual ones that crashed through the gate are in Hanoi. The palace is mostly kept "as is" and not much restoration going on. Cool bunkers down below and old equipment. It's worth a visit.

War Remnants Museum: even small, but it is the most popular museum in Saigon. Very interesting but depressing to view all the graphic photos. Outside there is hardware such as tanks, planes, helicopters, etc..

Saigon Central Post Office: In the downtown Ho Chi Minh City, beside Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica. The building was constructed by the French colonists in early 20th century during French Indochina. This post features the Gothic architecture style and was designed in well harmony with the surrounding ward. Today, this post office is an attraction for tourists in this city.

Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica: A cathedral located in the downtown of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Established by French colonists, the cathedral was constructed between 1863 and 1880. It has two bell towers, reaching a height of 58 meters (190 feet). Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, in Vietnamese Nha Tho Duc Ba, is a cathedral located in the downtown of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. This cathedral was built by the French colonists in 1863. It has two bell towers of 58 m height. All the building materials were imported from France.

Ho Chi Minh City Hall: originally called the Hôtel de Ville built in 1908 and now formally re-branded the People's Committee Hall, it's a striking cream and yellow French colonial building beautifully floodlit at night. No entry, but the statue of Uncle Ho in front is a very popular place for photos.

Giac Lam Buddhist Temple: the most archaic pagoda in town, which built in 1744. Here is the inheritance of Buddhism preachers from China. Giac Lam Pagoda has architecture of unusual excellence with huge columns where golden - plated parallel sentences engraved. Within its precinct, there is collection of religion - oriented flowers and 113 Buddhism statues made from valued woods and copper.

Vinh Nghiem Buddhist Temple: Built in 1964, the seven-storey Vinh Nghiem Buddhist Temple in Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street, District 3, opened in 1973. It is one of the largest and most beautiful Buddhist Temples in HCM City. It is half way from the airport to downtown.

Ben Thanh Market: The largest old-style market in the central district, with several hundred small stalls stuffed with goods on almost impassably narrow aisles. Due to its popularity with tourists, the market is now divided about half and half between tourist goods (Jeans, T-shirts, smaller souvenirs in abundance) and the stuff of regular life (fruit and vegetables, rice, kitchen wares, flowers, meat, fast food, and local-style pickled fruits and candies). Most items are not price-marked, and vendors always quote a higher price to tourists, so the fortitude to haggle will save you some money.

Saigon Water Puppet Show: An unique art which has it origin in the delta of the Red river in the tenth century. The farmers devised a form of entertainment using what natural medium they can find in their environment. In ancient times, the ponds and the rice paddies after harvest were the stage for these impromptu shows. If you don’t go up to Hanoi, you should see water puppet right in Saigon.

What to buy:

Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam, so it has a wide range of souvenirs, handy crafts, silks, especially lacquer paintings…join us we introduce you the best shoppings in Saigon.

How to design your tours in Saigon:

three days in Saigon are enough for this city, the first day you can do City tour of Saigon, the second day tour to Cuchi Tunnels, the last day to have a full day tour to Mekong Delta, in case you don’t have more time left. If you have one more day, I would recommend you stay one night in Mekong Delta./.

About Hanoi Capital - Vietnam

Hanoi, the oldest capital city in Southeast Asia, is located in the Red River Delta in the center of Northern Vietnam. Up to now, Hanoi has been one of the few cities in Asia left entirely void of the western-style boxy business architecture.

With the history of more than 1000 years, Hanoi has a lot of interesting things to see. Many ancient architectural features are still preserved, particularly in the fascinating warren of streets known as the Old Quarter. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city. Stroll or ride by cyclo through the lively "Old Quarter" and shop for silk, lacquer and ceramics, enjoy famed water puppet theatre... are great ways to discover its charm.

In the soul of any Vietnamese citizen, Hanoi has always been a symbol of culture and a source of pride throughout the history.

Hanoi Sightseeings:

From Hanoi, there are lots of sourrounding sites to explore. Inside the city, Ho Chi Minh Complex (Including Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Museum, One Pillar Pagoda) is a place that most travelers should not miss. Temple of Literature - some minutes walking from HCM Complex - is the oldest university in Vietnam. To have an overview of Northern Vietnam’s culture in general or Hanoi in paricular, pay a visit to these places: Museum of Ethnology, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Museum of Women, Hoa Lo Prison, Hoan Kiem Lake with Ngoc Son Temple nearby, Museum of History… Get farther to around 10-20km into the "widen Hanoi", traditional trade villages such as Bat Trang Ceramic Village, Duong Lam Ancient Village, Van Phuc Silk Village...are so attractive for their unique characteristic.

Hanoi is also the initial point for those who want to extend the visit to the famous Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh Province (Hoa Lu Citadel, Bai Dinh Pagoda, Nature Reserves Center of Tam Coc, Trang An, Kenh Ga, Van Long…) to the East or Mai Chau Valley, Sapa Hill Station to the North West; or Ba Be Lake, Ha Giang mountainous province… to the North East.

ONE PILLAR PAGODA: Located in Ngoc Ha, in the Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, on the west side of the ancient capital of Thang Long. The One Pillar Pagoda is architecturally-unique example of Vietnam's pagodas. It was first built in 1049 during the Ly Dynasty, on the west side of the ancient capital of Thang Long. Its original name was Dien Huu, expressing a wish for longevity of the second Ly emperor. The pagoda has the shape of a lotus blooming on its stem.

TRAN QUOC PAGODA: The Tran Quoc Pagoda is the oldest pagoda currently standing in Hanoi. It was constructed in the sixth century during the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De and was then named Khai Quoc, meaning "founding the country." At first it was built outside the Yen Phu Dyke and the move to West Lake. It has been named An Quoc, Tran Quoc and Tran Bac with architecture harmonious with nature, the pagoda complements the beautiful scenery around the lake.

HOAN KIEM LAKE AND NGOC SON TEMPLE: Hoan Kiem Lake, or the Lake of the Restored Sword, is located directly in the centre of Hanoi. The name is derived from a legend involving Emperor Le Thai To, in which he came across a giant tortoise while cruising on the lake. The tortoise took his sword that had secured victory against the Chinese aggressors of the Minh Dynasty. The emperor named the lake after this episode.

Hoan Kiem was already considered the most beautiful lake in Hanoi when Ngoc Son Temple was built on a small island during the 19th century. Saint Van Xuong, considered one of the brightest stars of Vietnam's literature and intellectual circles, was worshipped here. National hero Tran Hung Dao was also worshipped after he lad the Vietnamese people to victory over both Mongolian and Chinese invaders.

THE TEMPLE OF LITERATURE: The temple of Literature (Van Mieu) is a famous ancient monument consisting of the Temple of Literature and Vietnam's first university. The Temple of Literature was built in 1070 in honour of Confucius.

Six years later, Quoc Tu Giam, the first university of Vietnam, was on the premises of Van Mieu. It was the first educational school for royal family members, and it was later opened to talented students. In 1482 Emperor Le Thanh Tong ordered the erection of stela with inscriptions of the names, places of birth, and achievements of graduates who had taken examinations since 1442. Presently 82 stela stand at Van Mieu.

What to buy:

Hanoi is a shopping paradise for silk, lacquer ware, wood, custom tailoring and other Asian inspired design. The bargains are among the best in Asia. Artisans and craftsmen have set up shop in the Old Quarter for generations, and each street is named after the item traditionally sold there. Among the more interesting sights are the streets close to the lake full of nothing but stores overflowing with wave upon wave of white shoes, and a few shops offering to custom-carve black marble tombstones (complete with portrait) for anyone passing by. In the quarter between Hoan Kiem Lake and the Cathedral, you'll find numerous shops with the same selection but of better quality. Vendors know that, so prices are higher than in the Old Quarter. Shops can sometimes arrange shipment to overseas destinations, and even with the added costs you'll still have a bargain. There are two major shopping malls in Hanoi, Trang Tien Plaza and the new-built Vincom City Towers. Both are located in the Hoan Kiem District.

How to design your tours in Hanoi:

Three days in Hanoi are enough for this city, the first day you can do City tour of Hanoi, the second day tour to Cuchi Tunnels, the last day to have a full day tour to Mekong Delta, in case you don’t have more time left. If you have one more day, I would recommend you stay one night in Mekong Delta.

Other tips:

Watch out when crossing the road.
Don’t take cyclo, a kind of trishaw on your own.
Watch out your wallets as you are in the crowded markets.
Bargain hard as you shop in local markets and from street vendors./.

Mekong Delta - Rice Bowl of Vietnam & the World

Map of Mekong Delta - Vietnam
Map of Mekong Delta - Vietnam

The mighty Mekong River is one of the longest rivers in the world, it goes through 6 countries from China, to the border between Laos and Thailand, to Cambodia, and Vietnam before it empties in the East Sea (You may know with the name South China Sea, but Vietnamese don’t say that). This long river makes up the large Delta, the second in the world after Amazon River Delta. The Mekong Delta - or Cuu Long in Vietnamese - consists of nine branches (the Nine Dragons) of the mighty Mekong River, which begins its long journey to the East Sea (south China Sea) in the mountains of Tibet.

The delta is the life-blood of southern Vietnam, nourishing the region's rice paddies, vegetable plots and fruit orchards. The Mekong Delta provides an excellent opportunity to observe and experience traditional Vietnamese rural life. A boat trip through the myriad canals offers travelers a real insight to life in the countryside: peasant hard at work in their paddy fields, water buffaloes, tangled fruit orchards, simple, thatched-roof dwellings, temples, fishermen and excited children everywhere.

In the delta's towns - the major ones being Mytho, Caibe & Vinhlong, Cantho and Chaudoc - the river remains the central focus of daily life. Ferries ply its waters transporting people and goods to market or home after a long day's work, while providing a valuable link with the rest of the country and region. Travelers exploring the Mekong Delta will be well rewarded.

Experience the traditional floating markets in Can Tho, effectively unchanged for hundreds of years and not yet spoiled by tourism as in Thailand, explore the many beautiful islands that surround My Tho, just a short distance from Saigon, or a touch of Mekong Delta life in Caibe & Vinhlong.

• If you have just one full day, you can choose the options of Mytho or Caibe
• If you have one night, you can have homestay in Vinhlong if you are adventurous, or in deluxe hotel in Cantho.
• If you want to do boat up Mekong River to Pnom Phenh, then you need to have two nights in Cantho and Chaudoc before boat up to Pnom Phenh, Cambodia the third day.

Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is the bottom half of Vietnam's two rice baskets, the other being the Red River Delta in the North . This vast delta is formed by the deposition of the multiple tentacles and tributaries of the mighty Mekong River which has its origin in the Tibetan highland plateau 2,800 miles away. From its source, the river makes its way through China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam before flowing out into the South China Sea. The Mekong's Vietnamese name, Cuu Long, means Nine Dragons for the nine mouths that terminate the flow of this great river as it is absorbed by the sea.

The people of south Vietnam are often very proud of the richness and vastness of this land. When referring to the rice fields in this area, they often say, "co bay thang canh", meaning the land is so large that the cranes can stretch their wings as they fly. Today, the region is one of Vietnam's highest producer of rice crops, vegetables and fruits.

Life On The Mekong

The Mekong Delta was an ancient Khmer territory. The area was mostly marshland and forest. When the Nguyen Lords took control of this region, a series of canals were built and a system of transportation was implemented in the maze of water ways in the area.

The Mekong Delta is divided into 9 provinces: Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, Hau Giang and Minh Hai. The people in this region are made up of Vietnamese and some people of Khmer, Chinese and Cham origin. This accounts for the variety of religions that add to the cultural diversity of this area. Among the religions practiced here are: Buddhism, Catholicism, Cao Dai, Hoa Hao and Islam.

The southwest region of Vietnam is known for the vast rice fields and the huge plantations that make up the core of this region's economy. The region is also known for the many miles of waterways criss-crossing the land making this area both fertile and unique.

Fruit Orchards

The majority of Vietnam's fruits come from the many orchards of the Mekong Delta. On any given season, one can find a variety of tropical fruits that are produced by farmers of this region in the markets of Saigon, Hue, and Ha Noi. For many tropical fruits, the season is very short because they cannot be picked green and they don't last long in storage where they quickly loose their aroma. The greatest variety of fruits is available during the raining season, from June to September in the South. After they are picked, the fruits are transported on small boats to floating markets where they are sold to wholesale dealers. In the off-season, many orchards become flower nurseries to meet the peak demand for flowers during the new year celebration in the big cities. The orchards are divided by a myriad of small irrigation canals with delicate bamboo bridges called "Cau Khi" or monkey bridges crossing them.

Life On The River

The people living in the Mekong Delta make their living as farmers and fishermen. Often, they live right on the edge of the rivers or canals on various structures built from whatever materials found. Consequently, the architecture along the delta varies from place to place. Often, many homes have fisheries right under them. Enterprising individuals build a cage like structure of bamboo beneath their homes on these waterways to house fishes. As the fishes grew, they sell the whole batch to processors from the city and start with new ones. Life in the delta is tightly woven with its rivers as daily activities and businesses are conducted on its banks. Markets, stores, ship yards, repair shops are some of the more popular trades.

Floating Markets

Floating markets are held every morning from 5:00 to about 11:00. Phung Hiep market is the biggest since it is located at the intersection of 7 major canals. It is also a photographer's delight because it can be seen above from a bridge. Cai Rang and Phong Dien are two other notable floating markets in the delta. Boats loaded with produce from nearby orchards of the Mekong Delta converge to the floating market. They carry mostly fruits but also coconuts, vegetables and fishes. Buyers are local traders with bigger boats snapping everything by the bushels and resell at local markets or to wholesale dealers from big cities, often for a handsome profit. Large floating markets are not complete without its floating restaurants, floating gas stations and an occasional tour boat filled with tourists.

Tropical Fruits in Vietnam

Mangosteen
The Mangosteen is a fruit that is unique to South-East Asia. The fruit is extremely hard to grow and it often takes 8-15 years for a tree to bear fruits. The rind of the mangosteen is dark purple marked by a yellowish resin. In terms of size and shape, the mangosteen is similar to the Japanese persimmon. It is also compared to a small tomato. When sliced at the equator, the mangosteen yields white segments of flesh. These segments taste sweet and sour and have a slight acid after-taste similar to grapes or strawberries.

Rambutan
The Rambutan, also known unofficially as Hairy Cherry, has its origin in the tropical low-lands of Malaysia. The name rambutan came from the Malay word 'rambut' for hair. Today, the rambutan is grown in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The fruit is about 5 cm long and has soft fleshy hair from 2 to 3 cm long over the entire surface. The peel turns from green to yellow to red as the fruit ripens. Once peeled the fruit yields a flesh that is white and firm. The rambutans grow in large bunches on trees that are 20 m high.

Sapodilla
Sapodilla is one of several fruits which were brought to South-East Asia from Central America. During their occupation of the Philippines, the Spaniard brought this fruit to the country and eventually it was exported to the rest of region. When ripe, the fruit is very sweet, and has a molasses-like taste. The peel is thin and brown and the flesh itself is light brown. It is best eaten a couple days after it is picked, to wait for its resin to dry.

Sweet-sop
Sweet-sop, sugar-apple, and custard-apple are names given to this fruit from South America. Like the pomegranate, the sweet-sop is packed with seeds. The edible pulp is a thin layer covering the individual seed. The outer layers appear to be rough and scaly. The fruit is green even when it is ripe.

Longan
In Vietnamese, "long nhan" means dragon eye. The Longan is a close relative to the litchi. Longans are grown mostly in the cooler highlands of South-East Asia. It was brought here by Chinese immigrants as they migrated south and settled in various areas. The peel is brown and brittle. The meat is translucent white and is very juicy and sweet. In Vietnam, dried longans are cooked in water to make a dessert drink called 'nuoc long nhan'.

Star Fruit
The starfruit is a native fruit of South-East Asia. The fruit has a distinct taste and is often used in cooking. When sliced cross-wise, the pieces look like five distinct-angled stars. Consequently, the fruit is a must in certain Vietnamese dishes as garnishes. The fruit can be eaten raw or cooked. Starfruits grow in cluster of three of four. The sizes vary from 5cm to 17cm. The fruit is green when young, turning yellow to almost orange and slightly translucent when ripe. Starfruit's skin is quite tough while the flesh is soft, juicy, sweet and sour tasting.

Papaya
The papaya originated in Central America, and came to the Philippines during the Spanish occupation of this country. The fruit eventually spread throughout South-East Asia. The papaya tree bears only either male or female flowers with the female tree producing the fruits. Consequently, the male tree must be close by to pollinate the female flowers. The fruits are large, weighing up to 9 kg and often look like a large squash. The skin is thin like those of the watermelon and turns from green to yellow and orange as the fruit ripens. The flesh of the papaya may be yellow, orange, or reddish orange and has a consistency of a very ripe (soft) cantaloupe. Papayas are sweet and are used as dessert. In Vietnam, a popular dish using green papaya is "gỏi đu đủ bò khô", a salad like dish with shredded green papaya and shredded beef jerky eaten with a special hot sauce.

Guava
The guava originated in the tropical region of the Americas and reached South-East Asia in the 17th century. Guava fruits are either round or pear-shaped, with thin dark green skin which becomes yellowish green as the fruits ripen. The fruits range from small tomato size to as large as 13 cm in length. Some Vietnamese like to eat the guava when it is not completely ripe. The flesh is crunchy much like eating a slice of apple. Sometime, the guava slice is dipped in a mixture of salt and grounded red chili pepper. The Mekong Delta's Xá Lị variety is probably the most famous in all of Vietnam.

Waterapple
The waterapple is native to the South-East Asia. The coloring of the fruit varies from pale green to ruby red. The waterapple is bell-shaped and is about 5 cm in diameter. The center of the fruit is hollow and is filled with woolly fibers and brown seeds. The waterapple has a slightly acid flavor and can be very sour. Vietnamese often use the waterapplase as offerings at the altar because of their vibrant colors.

Corossolier
The corossolier is a close relative to the sweep-sop. In terms of size, the fruit is substantially larger than the sweet-sop with some fruits weighing as much as 1.5 kg. The peel is smoother with tiny spikes (more like bumps). These spikes turn black as the fruit ripens. The corossolier has less seeds than the sweetsop and the meat is more firm, almost chewy. In general, the fruit has a sweet and sour taste. In Vietnam, the corrosolier is blended with condensed milk and ice to make a delicious fruit drink. During the Tet season, the corossolier is preserved with sugar to make a candy-like treat called mứt.

Jackfruit
The Jackfruit is a native fruit of Asia. It has its origin in India, though after many centuries of trade, it reached South-East Asia where it is considered a delicacy. Jackfruits come in many shapes and sizes, although generally they are oblong or pear shaped. They can grow to 90 cm long and can weigh up to 44 kg. The name Jack is believed to be a Portuguese mispronunciation of a Malay word meaning round. Jackfruits have a thick pale green rind with thousands of sharp hexagonal spines. Once cut open, the interior yields dozens of individual golden yellow pulps. The meat of the pulp covers a large brown pit. When ripe, the meat is sweet. The pit can be boiled and eaten as well. The wood from the jackfruit tree is very strong. Sometimes, it is used to make furniture and to build houses. In the north, the wood from the jackfruit tree is carved into statues in pagodas.

Banana
Although the banana can be found throughout the tropics, it is a native fruit to South East Asia. Reference to the banana was first made in the Epics of the Pali Buddhist canon in 500 BC. Bananas were exported to Africa from Indonesia around 1,500 years ago. Consequently, reference to this fruit can be found in the Koran as the Tree of Paradise. The banana plant has no woody tissue, so it is not considered a tree at all, but a giant herb. The banana plant can grow to height of 4 to 8 m, depending on the variety. Today, Vietnam boasts 28 different varieties of banana from plantains (used in cooking) to the dwarf banana (finger size).

Sa Pa - Heaven Town in the Cloud

Sa Pa or Sapa located in Vietnam’s remote north west mountains, Sapa is famous for both its fine, rugged scenery and also its rich cultural diversity. Its lush, deep river valleys, in the shadows of Vietnam’s tallest peak Mount Fansipan, are home to Blue H’mong and Red Dao communities, who continue to maintain their strong traditions and warmly welcome visitors to their homes. Sapa is also famous for its street market, which attracts villagers from the surrounding hills and is particularly busy on Saturdays.

The unique embroidery, jewellery and clothes of the H’mong and Dao are good buys here, and the sight of dozens of minority women in their traditional clothing is a memorable part of any stay in Sapa Let Vantours introduce you to the cultures and landscapes of this unique region. We visit nearby minority villages, take a walk to the river below Cat Cat, see the Thac Bac Waterfall and spectacular valley views up the nearby Tram Ton Pass.
